Into Africa
A trip teaches the power of journalism
Most grand prize trips in national contests involve exotic and glamorous locales: the tropics, Europe, a ski trip. For Casey Parks, winner of The New York Times “Win a Trip With Nick” contest, the location was no less exotic but definitely less glamorous.
That’s because Parks, a master’s journalism student, went to Africa with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof. Out of 3,800 entries, Parks was selected as the winner. But the prize was no vacation. It was a reporting trip, a chance to learn how to cover poverty and issues of international importance by seeing them up close and without a filter.
