International students in Missouri and at Mizzou
The University of Missouri–Columbia celebrates International Education Week in November, but Mizzou’s global flavor extends beyond just one week or one month. You can find it year-round all around campus — in residence halls, in labs, in classrooms and elsewhere.
This year, the state of Missouri ranked 16th in the Open Doors survey of the states with the most international students. As the state’s flagship university, Mizzou contributes greatly to this number, with:
- 1,414 international students for fall 2006, up 3.2 percent from the previous year and the highest number since 1995,
- 96 countries represented in the student body,
- 338 students from China, the largest international student population at Mizzou; 207 from India; and 200 from South Korea,
- 880 visiting international scholars in the past year, from short-term guests to longer-term researchers, and
- A steady flow of students in the other direction, too, with a 58 percent increase in the number of Mizzou students studying abroad in the past five years in about 60 countries.
